About The Penang Bookshelf
I started The Penang Bookshelf in mid-2010 when I realised that I couldn't find the type of books I liked, i.e. current and not so current books, both fiction and non-fiction, about the place where I live. My experiment started on a market stall at the Little Penang Street Market which takes place on the last Sunday of each month. By the end of 2010 I realised I had too many books to display on a market stall, so wandered onto the internet. I was gratified to find lots of new customers here from all parts of Malaysia, other parts of Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America.
During the year up to May 2012, I experimented with a shop in the centre of George Town, Penang's capital. This is now closed since I didn't want to commit myself to regular shop hours and during this time more than 90% of The Penang Bookshelf's business continued to be from online customers. Sadly the shop was a costly distraction from providing a top class service to The Penang Bookshelf's online customers.
Nevertheless The Penang Bookshelf's full stock is still available for browsing by appointment for Penang residents and visitors. It is now housed at Aquarius, 4-8-8 Jalan Low Yat, Batu Ferringhi, Penang. Do come and visit The Penang Bookshelf there, but contact me beforehand to make an appointemnt.
