Most histories of Malaysia begin with the Sultanate of Melaka founded in the 15th century, despite the fact that it is fairly obvious to any student of Asian history that the country has had the benefit of a strong Indian influence in the past. Ironically even the term 'bumiputera' coined to denote indigenous peoples, rather than immigrants, is easily recognised as being derived entirely from Sanskrit.
